Joseph DiMaggio
Joseph DiMaggio is a New York City–born Master Session Artist who coaches hairstylists on how to move from the salon floor to the fashion runway. A former touring drummer, he first started cutting hair on bandmates in cramped vans and backstage green rooms, trading drumsticks for shears when he realized hair was the craft that truly lit him up.
Mentored by legendary session stylist Odile Gilbert, Joseph built his career in the fast, unforgiving world of fashion shows and editorial shoots. Today, he’s an in-demand lead hairstylist at New York, Milan, and Paris Fashion Weeks, creating looks that show up in designer collections and international magazines—and then breaking those same techniques down for stylists in his classes.
Through his workshops and the intensive Beyond Backstage program with Hattori Hanzo, Joseph teaches the real mechanics of session work: backstage etiquette, reading a designer’s vision, building long-wear styles at high speed, and translating runway ideas for salon clients. He also channels his obsession with craft into SHUHARI PRO, his own line of professional tools.
Joseph’s coaching is direct, generous, and rooted in experience. For stylists who feel the pull of fashion week, editorial work, or simply want to sharpen their eye and hands, he offers a clear path from “I wish” to “I’m on the team.”
