Why you need a squad like Amy Schumer
The last couple of weeks have been rough on my self-confidence. You know, those times when it feels like life wants to dump everything on you all at once. Thankfully, I have an amazing squad who’ve helped me stay positive and on track. Being part of an incredible group of trusted and supportive business friends can make life so much more fun and rewarding. Just ask Amy Schumer, she know’s what I’m talking about.
When we’re young we can’t wait to be “grown up” and independent. We’re obsessed with “me” and “mine.” It’s not until later in life that we realize an infinitely more powerful and fulfilling way to exist is to be interdependent.
As Steven Covey, the author of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People says:
“Life is, by nature, highly interdependent. To try to achieve maximum effectiveness through independence is like trying to play tennis with a golf club.”
No matter how talented you are, some things just can’t be done by one person. Instead we must build synergistic relationships with people we truly trust and want to be around, people who we want to see win with us.
History is littered with examples of great squads: Taylor Swift and her gang, the Brat Pack, Warhol and his posse, Picasso and Matisse — and we could keep going back to Socrates, Plato and co.
When I’ve got a great squad around me I find I just want to create. I don’t care what we’re creating, I just want to collaborate and share the energy.
Last week I was grateful for a much needed pep talk from two of my posse. The week before that I was saved from an embarrassing marketing faux pas by one of the group who’d been there before and knew better. This week I hope I’ll be helping one of them out in some way.
So who’s in your squad? If you don’t have one yet, maybe it’s time to start collecting. Think of people you trust, like to be with, who challenge and excite you. Then think of how you can help them.
I wouldn’t be where I am today without my squad and I thank you with all my heart. I am a better and happier person for being part of a posse and you will be to.
P.S. Hugs to: Christine, Liam, Francis, Marial, Ken and Charlene. You all rock!
