What counts as a segment.
- One segment
- A standard text of up to 160 characters, spaces included. Most short announcements fit in one.
- Longer texts
- A longer message still arrives as a single text on your client’s phone. Behind the scenes it travels as two or more segments of 153 characters each.
- Emoji
- An emoji or other special character changes how the whole message is sent and lowers the limit to 70 characters a segment, so the same words can cost more.

What salons ask before they hit send.
How much does a bulk text cost?
5¢ for each text segment sent, in your own currency: Canadian cents in Canada, US cents in the United States. A one-segment text to 500 clients is $25, before tax.
What is a text segment?
A segment is one standard text message of up to 160 characters, spaces included. A longer message still shows up as a single text on your client’s phone, but it is sent and billed as two or more segments of 153 characters each.
Do emojis cost more?
They can. An emoji or other special character changes how the whole message is sent and lowers the limit to 70 characters a segment, so the same message may take more segments.
Are appointment reminders still included?
Yes. Email and text appointment reminders and booking confirmations are included in every plan. The 5¢ applies to the marketing texts you choose to send.
Is bulk email still included?
Yes. Bulk email marketing is included in every plan.
Do I need my clients’ permission?
Yes. Send marketing texts only to clients who have agreed to hear from you. In Canada, anti-spam law (CASL) covers marketing texts and asks for three things: consent, your name on the message, and a way to unsubscribe.
Am I locked in?
No. salonMonster is month to month with no contract, and you can export your records as CSV files at any time. If you pay and change your mind in your first 30 days, you get a full refund.
